Struggle to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). This appeals to me--a PhD engineer--but is difficult to wield and, quite frankly, time-consuming to learn in its own right. The only IPA that students should be dealing with is a cold beer after an intense study session!
Typical lackluster book descriptions of how to pronounce Swedish words based off of those in the English language. This is fine for a start, but fails to communicate nuance and, frankly, is subject to misinterpretation.
Face-to-face lessons with a Swede. This is a good, albeit expensive, option. If the session is not recorded, however, how can one practice going forward?
This course is, to the author's knowledge, the first in-depth guide to Swedish pronunciation that circumvents all of these potential pitfalls. One does not need a PhD in phonetics, a massive collection of tomes, nor a garbled tape of an ancient Swedish lesson. Instead, this course cultivates a genuine interest in how we, as humans, use the anatomy of our vocal tract to generate sound. It then goes on to connect this newfound anatomical knowledge to the generation of legit Swedish pronunciation.
Approximately 15 years of constant struggle have generated, for me, a decent facsimile of Swedish pronunciation.
